Gandalf
Gandalf the grey is that friendly wizard who loves hobbits and whom hobbits love. They love the fireworks he conjures up during their gatherings. Blissfully unaware of his true power.
Gandalf is one of the five Istari sent in human form by the Valar to aid Middle Earth in its struggles against Sauron. The Istari are Maiar. Servants of the Valar. Magical spirits that existed before middle earth was made.
As a Maia, Gandalf's name was Olorin. The other wizards are Alatar and Pallando (Blue Wizards), Curumo (Saruman the white wizard) and Aiwendil (Radagast the brown wizard).
Later, after his battle with the Balrog, he was not allowed to die as his work was not complete. He returned as Gandalf the White. Noticeably younger and far more powerful. In fact, when his friends Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli were reunited with him in the woods, they could not recognise him, and mistook him for Saruman.
Gandalf took the form of an old man, and he used his staff as a walking stick and to rest on, like a feeble old man would. As usual, appearances are deceiving. He used his white staff to cast Saruman out of King Theoden. When he eventually defeated Saruman, he broke Saruman's staff, destroying his power.
Besides his staff, Gandalf wielded his sword, Glamdring, in battle. In the later battles, he rode his horse, shadowfax. The fastest, proudest, most valued horse of Rohan.
After Sauron was defeated and Aragorn crowned king, Gandalf was free to leave middle earth, on a ship to the Undying Lands.
