Aragorn
We are first introduced to Strider at the Prancing Pony. A mysterious figure lurking in the shadows, watching Frodo, Merry, Pippin and Sam, while smoking his pipe. Not exactly someone you would trust on sight. Frodo slips on the ring and vanishes from sight in front of everyone. Strider later takes them aside and tells them about discretion and becomes their protector.
Strider was the chief of the rangers. Weather beaten men who travel the streets at night, fending off the dark creatures that would otherwise harm the people there.
His appearance is deceptive. Later, at Rivendell, Strider is revealed as Aragorn, son of Arathorn. The heir of Isildur. The rightful high king of Gondor.
His ancestor had left Gondor with some of their men, leaving the stewarts in charge of Gondor, until his descendent should return to claim the throne.
Aragorn is one of the Numenoreans. The rightful heir of the throne. The king who would unite the men on middle earth. A high heritage, the woman he loves is of an even higher race.
Aragorn was raised in Rivendell by Lord Elrond. To keep him safe from Sauron's spies and to prepare him for his destiny. Elrond's daughter, Arwen, the beautiful Lady Evenstar lived in the golden woods, with her grandmother, Lady Galadriel.
One day, when Arwen went to Rivendell to visit her father, Lord Elrond, Aragorn met her and fell in love with her. Lord Elrond knew of their love for each other but forbade it. A union between Aragorn and Arwen would mean her eventual death.
As Arwen is from the elven race, she was an immortal. She could leave middle earth with her father eventually, to the undying lands, where she need never taste death. Aragorn, as a mortal man, was doomed to die eventually. After his death, she would have nothing left but sorrow and would die soon after from a broken heart.
Elrond had a word with Aragorn. Aragorn asked her to leave him for her own sake. To go to the Undying Lands with her father.
Arwen wore a necklace with a jewel, the evenstar. When Aragorn went on his journey to escort the ring bearer, Arwen gave him her necklace as a token of her love. Aragorn wears that necklace whereever he goes.
Aragorn is a warrior, skilled with the sword. He had fought many battles and lived in the wild for decades. A formidable foe in the battlefield and a commanding presence.
Yet when he entered Gondor to claim his throne, he did so as a healer. After the battle, there were many injured by Sauron's dark forces. He knew what was needed to heal the injuries and set about helping the wounded recover. The years on the battlefield against the dark forces as well as his early years under Elrond's care taught him quite a bit about healing herbs too.
When not at war, Aragorn, having been brought up amongst the elves, by Elrond himself knew, poetry, songs and lore. He would at times recite poetry.
Later, the beautiful Eowyn, Lady of Rohan met Aragorn and fell for him. Aragorn still had his mission and he still loved Arwen, so Eowyn's love was unrequited.
Later, when Aragorn was crowned by Gandalf as the king of Gondor, He married Arwen, this time with Elrond's blessings. He was 90 years old at that time, as his people had three times the normal human life span. He was given the gift of being able to choose when to die. To be able to give up his life when he felt it was time to go, rather than have his life taken for him. At the age of 210, he had a final discussion with Arwen, and then, he lay down on his bed and let go of his life. Arwen died of a broken heart a year later.
