Daniel Swarovski founded Swarovski during the 19th century. The goal of the company was to cut crystals automatically. His patented machine cut crystals more quickly and accurately than possible by hand. Initially, the austrian crystal was used for optical products, grinding tools as well as swarovski crystal jewelry and crystals for chandeliers. These crystals were often sewn onto formal jackets and gowns. In 1913, Daniel Swarovski created crystals specially for such purposes -- for the fashion industry. Later, a playful employee made crystal animals which became part of the company's product line.

These days, with so many crystal manufacturers around, why are swarovski crystals so coveted?

I used to make jewelry and collected beads and findings from sources from all over the world for my work. Of these, swarovski crystal beads are my favourites. I've compared them to other austrian crystals as well as beads from around the world. Swarovski crystals shine more than regular glass beads. They are more refined than the competition in terms of finish, even when the competition includes interesting high shine treatments to their beads. The cut of a swarovski crystal is excellent. As if they were cutting diamonds and not glass. The quality is unsurpassed.

By mid 20th century, Swarovski developed special treatments that gave their crystals special effects. Such crystals would reflect light in a multitude of colors. Their AB (aurora borealis) crystals and other special effect crystals take advantage of that technology. I especially love the AB crystals as they give jewelry a fairy-like effect.

I found that swarovski crystal jewelry, or rather, the swarovski crystal necklaces, swarovski crystal earrings and swarovski crystal bracelets I made using my collecion of swarovski crystal beads turned out a lot more popular than those made of glass or other austrian crystals. Besides the crystals that were faceted to shine like diamonds, they had smooth cut crystals with smooth sides and which glistened rather than dazzled. These beads were harder to get but jewelry made with them looked more exquisite than jewelry made with any other material I had available.

Mirror mirror on the wall. What's the cheapest of them all? swarovski crystal?
