The Baby Cot
Let's start with baby cot, since that is where infants spend most of their time in their early years. First, it has to be child safe. The sides should be high enough to prevent baby from falling out. Eventually, baby is going to learn how to pull herself to stand up and you don't want her to fall out of her cot in her little adventures.
At the same time, it should be easy for caregivers to put baby in the cot and take her out. One side of the cot should be able to be lowered from the outside to facilitate easy access to the baby.
There should be no strings or straps longer than 3 inches in the cot. That includes the strings that tie the bumper pads around the cot to prevent baby from bumping her head. Anything longer than 3 inches could be used by a playful baby to accidentally strangle herself. The comforter and pillow should be very light. Get baby bedding and baby pillows for the little one.
What sort of bedding should you get?
On a hot day, light cotton bedding keeps baby cool. In colder seasons, warm flannel bedding is warm and comfortable. However, it is best to keep the room at a temperature that is comfortable for baby through the heating season.
As for colors, pastels are soothing for baby. Great for bedtime. Yet a curious baby would love a bedding with interesting patterns that catches her attention. The cartoon characters or animals or baby's favourite things on bedding would provide some entertainment for baby, after all, being stuck in the cot can get very boring.
Decorating the walls of baby's room
You could paint the wall plain soothing colors. But baby would love it even more if you wallpaper it with pictures of things that interest her. Or you have an artistic flair, you could paint pictures on the walls that would entertain the little one.
Lighting baby's room
At night, you could use lights in the cornices and a main overhead light while baby is awake but if baby is scared of the dark, when it is time to sleep, a bedside lamp should do the trick. Just place it close enough to the cot to provide enough light to comfort baby, but more than an arm's length away from the cot so that the baby cannot touch it. You don't want accidents.
