Weight loss can be summed up as this. Burn more calories than you consume. Eat less, exercise more and you will lose weight.
That means you diet, watch what you eat, eat smaller portions. Then you work out to burn away excess calories. Once you consume less calories than you burn, your body is forced to use your fat stores to provide the necessary energy for its activities. As it burns up your fat reserves, you lose weight.
Sounds simple in principle but it is so hard to follow. We all know how to lose weight. It is just so difficult to eat less calories and exercise is so tiring and boring.
There are plenty of quick fixes. Diet pills, weight loss patches. All these promise quick weight loss without the pain. I honestly wanted to try some diet pills but am concerned about the possible side effects. Read about liver failure in the use of diet pills that contain Ma Huang, or ephedra. Somehow, the slow but healthy way seems a lot more attractive.
Still, reducing calories means cutting down the sugary drinks and switching to plain water instead. Ok, you can add a twist of lemon to your drinking water for flavor and still keep it at zero calories.

1 can of coke contains 155 calories while an entire bottle of plain water contains zero calories.
For someone who loves food, the diet part is the biggest struggle.
The other part of the equation is to get more exercise. Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Get off a few stops before your destination and walk the rest of the way. Jog daily. Use the treadmill. Find an exercise you like and do it regularly, tennis, swimming, cycling... just get active.
For the time challenged, it is daunting. I prefer going for a workout program. Currently, I follow Billys BootCamp Elite workout program. I get bored really easily but this workout video is interesting. The energy and enthusiasm exuded by the participants is contagious. Add to the fact that some of them are moms with kids and their bodies are superb. These serve as an inspiration as to what is possible if you make the effort. There are 3 workouts you can vary and some bonus workouts to add more flavour so you would not get bored. The billy bands resistance bands and weights help you get results fast. I saw inch loss (measured my waist regularly) when I stuck to it for 2 months but hardly saw for actual weight loss (the scales refused to budge). Still, it is great to find that my shorts and jeans that used to be tight are looser.
Losing weight and keeping it off requires a change in lifestyle. I stopped working out for 2 months and put on those inches again. It has to be incorporated into your daily routine. I am struggling with that.
