Makeup can either make a girl look gorgeous.. or awful. Badly applied makeup looks fit only for Halloween.

Many different looks can be created with the use of a little makeup. From a natural, no-makeup nude look which makes a woman looks so much prettier than she might barefaced, to the radiant look that makes her look effortlessly gorgeous, to the dramatic screen-siren look with red lips and sultry eyes, to the gothic look that would make her a great mate for a vampire.

Whatever look you choose, the steps are more or less the same. All you do is to play with the colors and tweak the way you might apply the makeup.

As for what kind of makeup you should use, mineral makeup is very popular these days because of the beautiful results. Here are some to check out:

How to apply makeup

Entire books have been written on how to apply makeup. I can only offer some basic makeup tips to help you get started.

The success in your makeup depends on how you apply the makeup. Invest in good makeup brushes.
Ready?
Start with your blank canvas to work from.

  1. Cleanse and moisturize your face.
  2. Scrutinize your skin in the mirror. Do you really need a concealer? If you do, pick one a few shades lighter than your skin tone and apply a little over the problem areas and blend completely into your skin.
  3. Then pick a foundation for your skin type in a shade that is close to your skin tone. Dab on a little on your forehead, your nose, your cheeks, chin and jawline. Blend the foundation with your fingers thoroughly into your skin so it looks like your skin and not a mask. Apply foundation well beneath your jawline as well to avoid that telltale line on your jawline. Or use one of the latest airbrush makeup products for a more natural finish.
  4. Do you want a matte finish? Then dust little loose powder over your foundation. For a more natural look you might want to skip loose powder.
Alternatively, you could skin the foundation , concealer and loose powder. Use a powder compact right after you moisturize your face for a faster application.

Get your foundation as perfect as you can. You should look like you have perfect skin, not a perfect mask. Once you've got that right, the rest should be easy.

Eye makeup

This is where you can really change your look. Do you want to focus on the eyes or the lips, or both?

If you want to focus on the lips, then apply a little eye liner on the lower lash line using an eye pencil to define your eyes. You need a steady hand for this. Hold down the lower eyelid lightly so you can draw the line as close to the lash line as possible. If your eyelashes are light, apply a coat of dark mascara on you upper lashes with the length of the brush. Hold the brush vertically and lightly apply mascara on the lower lashes.

Dramatic eye makeup is achievable with bright eye shadow, or with the use of eye liners. For example, you can draw cats eyes with a liquid liner, starting with a thin line from the inner corner of your eye, right on or above the upper lash line, thickening the line gradually as you reach the middle of the line and winging out at the outer edge of the eye. You need lots of practice to get it right.

Blushers

A touch of color can transform you from pale to radiant. Be careful as you do not want to look like a clown, unless you intend to wear clown makeup.

The powder blush no foundation is a quick way to look radiant. Just moisturize your skin, dust on loose powder. Then dust a little coral, bronze or peach blusher very lightly over forehead, tops of cheeks, chin and tip of nose for all over radiance. Here's where you can get your ideal blush

These are all the tools of the trade. From make up applicators, make up removers, makeup foundations, powders, blushers, shadows, the works. Various formulations and color pallettes too. Designer brands?
Try LORAC makeup for glamour, or Christian Dior makeup for a naturally pretty, flattering look.
